Long story short, It doesn’t matter!!!
You can meditate lying flat on your back to standing in a Tai Chi resting stance with your knees slightly bent and everything in between. Very few people are flexible enough to enjoy, if you can call it enjoyable, the recommended full lotus position. Ugh! My legs won’t do that at all. Sometimes I can handle a half lotus but WHO CARES!
Use the position that is most comfortable to you. That’s where you will get the most benefit. If your body is tied up in a pretzel because that’s how someone told you to meditate and you can’t get comfortable, you will never relax into good meditation.
I normally sit in an over stuffed chair with my legs gently crossed and my hands folded in my lap. It’s comfortable so it works. However, I’ve meditated lying down, standing up, walking, driving (don’t close your eyes with this one), swimming, kayaking and sailing. If you can relax your body, you can meditate pretty much anywhere anytime.
Don’t stress yourself. Just meditate.
